About amPIL

Find out more about our exciting features

Initial Setup

Navigate to "User Account"

Upon first load, you will need to set passwords for students and staff to access the data. The default password for both staff and students is "password"

Admin password

This is set to "password" by default. This will allow admin users to modify more advanced settings such as the structure of the school. If you have forgotten your password, you can use the password reset feature. This password should only be given to certain staff that you want to grant admin privileges to.

Student password

This is set to "password" by default. Students will be asked for this password, alongside their date of birth (optional) when they log on to use the site.

Subject Settings

Percentage needed for red/amber/green: This allows you to set the tolerances when amPIL displays student attainment using a "traffic light" system.
Tolerance to be classed as "At Average": On student feedback sheets, the option is given to detail if students are working above/at/below the average score for the rest of the class. This allows you to set the percentage tolerance when generating this.

Customising amPIL for your school

  • Navigate to "Admin Menu"
  • Requires admin password (see above). Here you can fully customise amPIL to work with your school. Once logged in, you should see two menus. You should begin by setting up the school structure

Setting up amPIL for your school

    Adding or modifying subjects

You can add as many subjects as you desire to use with amPIL. You can also use this to delete all data associated with this subject. Warning: This is a non reversible process.

    Set up schemes of work

Add new Schemes of work for students to follow. By navigating into the second level, you can add individual topics to each Scheme of Work.

    Enter assessment data

Add new assessments that will be used with amPIL

Clicking on the tick next to an assessment will make data entry available for this assessment to the students through the student app

By navigating to the second level, you can:

  • Add new topics
  • Amend marks allocated per question
  • Reorder questions
  • Define grade boundaries
  • You can bulk upload assessment data here also by downloading a template csv file to upload

    Setting up classes

Add all yeargroups that you intend to use with amPIL

By navigating into the second level you can add individual classes and assign a Scheme of Work that each class will follow, and any assessments they will sit in the academic year.

Once this is complete, you should assign all assessments that each class will be sitting

Link assessment topics with schemes of work

First navigate to a scheme of work that has been set up, and select a topic from the list to map

By clicking either the tick or cross next to each topic, you can assign prerequisite topics from the assessments. This will be used to predict how the students will perform when meeting new topics. You can use a keyword search using the bar along the bottom to help filter topics

    Adding/amending Student details

    Adding/modifying student data manually

By navigating to a particular class, you can enter the following information for each pupil:

  • Student ID: Must be unique. Used to identify individual students
  • Full Name
  • Date of birth (optional) This is used to allow students to securely log on to amPIL Student Version. If you do not enter a DoB, students will be able to access their own area by simply clicking on their name.
  • Teaching group
  • Bulk upload student details

The information above can be bulk uploaded by using a csv file. Student ID must be unique, and will be used to amend existing information in the database

After a bulk upload, you will be given the option to remove any students that are not on the upload file. This should be useful at the start of an academic year. You can simply upload a new csv and existing student information will be updated. Student ID's must not change for the upload to be successful

You will be given the option to fully remove redundant data from amPIL. We recommend instead that you move the students to be off roll. If you do this, their data will still be available should they rejoin the school. All data will be removed automatically after 7 years.

    Enter Assessment totals

You can use this feature to help validate the student data entry

Students will be prompted to recheck their submission data if their total score does not match up with the teacher submitted score

This is an optional feature, and if left blank the students will just be shown their total score for their data entry

    Using amPIL (Staff)

    Student Feedback Reports

Here you can generate student RAG feedback sheets to give to your students by class. You can customise the sheet to include:

  • Average grade for the class
  • Grade awarded
  • If students are working above/at/below the average score from the class
  • The feedback sheet generated is a PDF detailing:

  • Question Number
  • Topic
  • Mark Awarded
  • Mark available
  • RAG attainment indicator
  • Any additional information you chose to include on the feedback sheet at the previous stage is displayed at the bottom of the page

    Class Reports

Teachers can download a class overview sheet following an assessment, colour coded RAG. Teachers can use this to immediately highlight strong and weak topic areas.

The "Top 3 and Bottom 5" topics from the class are given in a table at the bottom of this feedback sheet

This report can be exported into MS Excel from here and used to upload to other services that you may use this data for.

    SoW RAG Mapper

Using the Scheme of work mappings you allocated when setting up amPIL for your school, you will be provided with a RAG feedback detailing topic areas students are likely to struggle with/excel at when meeting them for the first time. This is generated using by mapping the assessment topics as prerequisites to topics the students are about to be taught

Teachers can use this feature to proactively plan intervention and differentiation when teaching these topics

    Revision Lists

Use the icons next to each assessment to view or create revision lists for assessments

If this is the first time you have done this, you will need to set topic headers that will be displayed on the revision lists

    Create revision lists

Simply highlight all questions from an assessment and by using the buttons at the bottom, you can assign these under topic headings

If the topic headings give too much or not enough detail, you can customise the displayed text using the orange modify button

Once a revision list has been created, students will be able to download this themselves through the student version of amPIL

    View revision list

You can use this button to download a pdf revision list for the assessment if one has been created.

    Submission Checker

After selecting a class and an assessment, you will be able to track in real time when students have submitted their feedback from an assessment.

  • Student name red: Not begun uploading the data yet
  • Student name amber: Student currently completing feedback. This bar will begin to fill up as the students complete this feedback
  • Student name green: Student has completed feddback for every question
  • Student name blue: Data has been uploaded for this student by a member of staff
  • This data can be refreshed on demand using the button at the top of the page

    Input Data

You can use this feature to either bulk upload student data via csv template or manually using the amPIL interface.

    CSV Upload

Download the template from this page and enter student data to the CSV file before uploading. Please note that the Student ID must match the Student ID stored within amPIL for this to be successful. amPIL will check the integrity of this data automatically, and will not allow marks to be awarded above the maximum allowed for a question. If this happens you will see an error.

    Manually enter data

You can manually enter the student data here using the same interface as the students. Click the +- arrows next to each question until the number of marks awarded is correct.

    Using amPIL (Student)

Students can log in to the student version of amPIL by first typing the name of their school. They will be prompted for the student password that you set up in the first stage. If a date of birth has been uploaded, students will be prompted for this as a login check. Otherwise they can access this just by clicking their name. If needed, teachers can override this date of birth check by clicking "teacher override" and entering the main password.

    Student Feedback Reports

Students can download their feedback sheets from an assessment here. If no data has been input for this assessment, you will see an error.

    SoW RAG Mapper

Students can access their RAG breakdown for the scheme of work they are following here. Students can only see their own results

    Revision Lists

If a revision list has been created, students can download this here. If no list has been generated, they will be prompted to ask their teacher to create one.

    Input Data

Students can input their data here for an assessment using the +- buttons. Access to this can be limited through the staff version so students cannot see the topics/number of marks before an assessment has been sat.
